How College GPA is Calculated

In higher education, every course carries a specific number of **semester credit hours** (or quarter units). A 4-credit Organic Chemistry course influences your GPA twice as heavily as a 2-credit physical education elective. To calculate your college GPA:

  1. Multiply each course's credit hours by the grade point value (e.g. 4 credits × 3.7 for an A- = 14.8 quality points).
  2. Sum all quality points earned during the semester.
  3. Divide total quality points by the total number of letter-graded credit hours.

Undergraduate Academic Standing Benchmarks

3.50 – 4.00: Dean's List & Latin Honors

Qualifies for semester academic distinction, Greek honor societies (Phi Beta Kappa), and top graduate school admissions.

3.00 – 3.49: Good Standing / Competitive

Meets NCAA eligibility, employer campus screening cutoffs (Fortune 500), and baseline master's degree prerequisites.

2.00 – 2.99: Minimum Graduation Floor

Meets minimal baccalaureate graduation criteria, but offers narrow safety against academic probation.

Below 2.00: Academic Probation Range

Triggers official registrar academic warning or suspension risk. Requires immediate advisor consultation and course retakes.
